Annual Fire Extinguisher Inspection

Did you know that your fire extinguishers need to be inspected each year? The fire code states that “A trained person who has undergone the instruction necessary to reliably perform maintenance and has the manufacturer’s service manual shall service the fire extinguishers not more than 1 year apart” and that such person “have the proper types of tools, recharge materials, lubricants, and manufacturers recommended replacement parts or parts specifically listed for use in the fire extinguisher.” and “The owner or designated agent or occupant of a property in which fire extinguishers are located shall be responsible for such inspection, maintenance and recharging.” Smiths Fire Extinguisher. offers annual fire extinguisher inspection at your location to update your fire extinguishers so they meet the NFPA fire codes, OSHA standards, and insurance regulations.

Monthly Fire Extinguisher Inspection

In addition to annual fire extinguisher inspections, monthly inspections are also required? Every 30 days a fire extinguisher is required to be given an inspection or "quick check" to be sure that it is accessible and will operate. This means verifying that the extinguisher is in the designated location, has not been operated or tampered with and has not incurred any obvious physical damage that could prevent proper operation. NFPA 10 does not require an engineer or fire inspector for this inspection – it can be done by a building owner, occupant or a designated representative. "Fire extinguishers shall be inspected when initially placed in service and thereafter at approximately 30-day intervals. Fire extinguishers shall be inspected, manually or by electronic monitoring, at more frequent intervals when circumstances require...and shall include a check of at least the following items:

(1) Location in designated place
(2) No obstruction to access or visibility
(3) Operating instructions on nameplate legible and facing outward
(4) Safety seals and tamper indicators not broken or missing
(5) Fullness determined by weighing or “hefting”
(6) Examination for obvious physical damage, leakage, or clogged nozzle
(7) Pressure gauge reading or indicator in the operable range or position
(8) Condition of tires, wheels, carriage, hose, and nozzle checked (wheeled units)
(9) HMIS (hazardous materials identification systems) label in place”
-NFPA 10 – 6.2

Recharge of Fire Extinguisher

A fire extinguisher recharge is required any time you use your fire extinguisher, even if you accidentally release only a little bit. Losing even just a few milliseconds of pressure or chemical extinguishant could result in faulty fire extinguisher operation and potentially a fire that does not get extinguished in time to save your property from devastating damage.

Emergency/Exit Lighting Inspection

Emergency lights and emergency exit lighting are essential for maintaining a safe workplace. They help keep order, prevent panic, enable safe movement, and contribute to timely evacuation. Our regularly scheduled inspection, testing, and maintenance service gives you peace of mind..

• Lights will work during an emergency
• Facility security will be improved
• Emergency egress from your building will be safe
• Downtime will be minimal
• Costs from injury and claims will be reduced

Hands on Fire Training

Will you or your employees know how to operate a fire extinguisher in the “heat” of the moment? Do you understand the different types of fires and the different types of fire extinguishers available to extinguish those fires? Are you aware of the hazards created when using the wrong type of fire extinguisher on a fire? Smiths Fire Extinguisher offers, at your location, live, hands-on training for the proper use of fire extinguishers following a classroom discussion based on your unique situation. Although hands-on training is not required each year, it is required that all employees have some sort of formal fire extinguisher training each year.
